The purpose of the Southland Council of Teachers of English (SCTE) is to foster study, investigation, and research in language arts education; to offer opportunities for sharing effective ways of teaching the English language arts and of improving teaching skills; to provide opportunities for the examination and evaluation of professional ideas and problems; and to work in cooperation with the California Association of Teachers of English (CATE) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). SCTE is a non-profit organization (tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3)a of the Internal Revenue Code).
Any person engaged in, preparing for, or otherwise interested in the teaching of the English language arts in the public, private, or charter schools of California at any level may become a member by payment of annual dues. Membership of SCTE includes membership to CATE and vice versa, as SCTE is a local affiliate of CATE.
Members enjoy discounted registration to the SCTE Fall Conference, SCTE Spring Fling, the CATE annual convention, and other activities sponsored by the two organizations.
Council Board Meetings
All members are encouraged to attend SCTE’s board of directors meetings, which are held five times each year, to participate in the discussions and decisions made by the board. At board meetings, members plan the activities of the organization, hear about the latest legislation, testing news, and happenings in the state, and discuss teaching issues within the various school districts represented by those in attendance.
