Need to bring your writing lessons back to life? Not too scared to try something new? After a great share by Heather Macias, teacher consultant at the South Coast Writing Project, you'll choose from a menu of spook-tacular lesson ideas created by expert ELA teachers. By the end of our time together, you'll come away with a bag of writing-centered activities ready to implement in class on Monday.

An optional tour of the brand-new Billie Jean King Library will follow the workshop.

Write, move, draw, and discuss as we engage in culturally responsive activities to artwork in the Getty’s collection, exploring issues of race, class, gender and more.  Activities will be participatory and readily adaptable for the classroom. Over lunch we will talk with Getty educators to help them learn more about classroom needs. Includes morning coffee, parking, and lunch. Attendees will be emailed prior to the event with meeting directions.

Writing for Authentic Audiences

Join us for a day of workshops on teaching writing for real-world audiences. Stenhouse author Mark Overmeyer will model how to engage students in peer response modeled after a real-world writer's workshop; a panel of working folks will capture how writing works in their respective careers; experienced teachers will explore this theme in workshops, including how to use a real-world mentor text in the classroom.

This walking tour will include the Downtown Library, the Bradbury Building, Angel’s Flight, Pershing Square, and the US Bank tower. Our guide will regale us with the history of these landmarks and the people who made them come alive.

NCTE honored SCTE with the 2016 Kent D. Williamson Affiliate Membership Award for membership growth this past year. With the annual CATE Convention held in Orange County – SCTE territory – we welcomed many new CATE/SCTE members to our ranks, and both organizations were recognized for membership growth during the year. Celebrating the award are board members: Joanne Fahey, Mary Adler, Tracy Sprague, Courtney Lockwood, Jennifer Collison, Randi Seligson, and April Parker, who met for the January 7 SCTE board meeting.

The Undiscovered Chinatown Tour
to uncover history, treasures, and great shopping

SCTE members – a hardy group of 12 walkers – enjoyed a tour of Chinatown in late May. Organized by vice president Julia Peacock, the tour led us through the art center, a very colorful temple, and into the historical plazas, and ended in a new street of many restaurants, where many of us relaxed our well-worked feet and satisfied our desire to eat that wonderful-smelling Chinese food.
