Allison Marchetti and Rebekah O’Dell
Allison Marchetti and Rebekah O’Dell will be our morning keynote speakers and will also lead a session on writing. They co-write a blog called "Moving Writers," and through that collaboration they decided to write their book, Writing With Mentors.
According to Allison and Rebekah, "our passion is writing instruction — the what, the how, and the who. Especially the who. Our students are at the heart of great writing instruction.
"Our classrooms have come a long way from the assigning-writing methods of the past where students were expected to write at home and return with a clean copy of their paper a few days later. In today’s classrooms, teachers teach the skills of writing and invite students to practice these skills in class. We invite students to choose their own topics and find their own writing processes. We confer with writers about their current projects and support them in revision work throughout. We supply them with real world models and write beside them. This is teaching writing."
Carrie Arcos
Our lunch keynoter, Carrie Arcos is a National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature for Out of Reach; her second novel is There Will Come A Time.Crazy Messy Beautiful will be available soon. She lives with her family in Los Angeles, California.
On her website, she lists several of her miscellaneous life jobs, "But the best job, other than writing, has been that of a teacher," she explains. "I taught High School English and coached Cross Country and Track for a few years in primarily urban environments, and man, I miss those kids. Although it was always a little rough to get through early American literature because there was a piece we had to read with the word seaman in it. The boys lost it every time." She now teaches writing to college students.
Informed by both her teaching and writing experience, Carrie will lead a session of mentor writing, using her book as a mentor text.
